If you are reading this you are finally nearly there,  just a few more days or weeks and you will be holding your baby.

There is so much you can do to prepare for this last stage, making sure your in the right frame of mind and that your body is ‘match ready’ will go along way to ensuring you and your baby have the best possible birth.

As much as this is the time to get all your ducks in a row so you are ready for the baby, you much also ensure your body is ready for the task ahead too..it’s not called labour for nothing!!  Fill up on good nutrition and have lots of rest and sleep.

Also consider including some of the following in your labour preparation and during your labour.

There’s plenty a course of Acupuncture can do to help you prepare for labour.

Research from New Zealand shows having acupuncture on a weekly basis from 36 weeks onwards resulted in a third less medical inductions, epidurals and emergency caesareans compare to local population rates. 1

Research also shows that Acupuncture can help to induce labour and reduces the first stage of labour. 2

When I work with women using Acupuncture to help induce labour I focus the sessions on any underlying imbalances that maybe hindering this very natural process. I encourage the use of TENS machine at home as an adjunctive to the course of acupuncture as when used on points I specify it can enhance the effects of the acupuncture session.

Ensure your pelvis is properly aligned as this will:

  • Help to line up the pelvic muscles for easier delivery
  • Loosens muscles to allow baby to move into proper position for labour
  • Help to overcome pregnancy hormones effect

Relaxation and Hypnobirthing

A great way to prepare for your birth is to make sure you are relaxed and in the right frame of mind for the birthing process that lays ahead.

Hypnobirthing teaches you to relax and stay calm and in control whatever is happening to you or around you.

Group Strep B

Please ensure you investigate Group Strep B, make sure you know the symptoms and if you are in any doubt at all please talk to your midwife or doctor about getting tested.

The consequences of ignoring Group Strep B during labour could have devastating effects if not treated correctly. Forearmed is forewarned so please do research on this.

Delayed Cord Clamping

Research has shown that Immediate Cord Clamping deprives the baby of up to 40% of its intended blood supply. Research by Farrar, Duley et al shows that leaving the cord intact leads to a weight gain of up to 210g in the five minutes following birth. The blood that the baby is deprived of contains Stem cells, Blood cells and other natural hormones, intended to complete the birth process.

Immediate Cord Clamping is a major risk factor for anaemia in newborns. Research studies by Van Rheenan, Andersson/Brabin and Mercer have shown that Immediate Cord Clamping leads to long term anaemia which impedes learning and development.

Hospitals throughout the Western world have been practising Immediate Cord Clamping for 40-50 years and are now well into second generation cord clamping.

If you want delayed cord clamping please ask your midwife and doctors to ensure this happens.

Placenta Encapsulation

The Placenta Network states that your placenta is packed full of nutrients and can if eaten be very beneficial to your recovery.  The placenta contains:

  • Stem Cells and Growth Factors
  • Iron – essential for oxygen absorption in the cells
  • Vitamins B6 – aids in the making of antibodies
  • Vitamin E – for healing damaged skin cells
  • Oxytocin hormone – essential for facilitating birth and breastfeeding
  • Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) – responsible for reducing stress levels
  • Cytokines – Fibroblasts that trigger cell metabolism healing and replacing damaged cells and tissue

A trained practitioner can come to you and transform your placenta into a fresh tasty smoothie to drink straight away and then the remainder can be encapsulated into tablets and/or a homoeopathic remedy to be taken during your recovery process.
