Stress has long been thought to have an impact ones ability to conceive but research recently published by the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Centre has proved that it can actually increase your chances of becoming infertile.

The researched showed that women with the stress biological measured in saliva are 29% less likely to become pregnant.  They are also more than twice as likely to meet the clinical definition of infertility, which is remaining not pregnant despite 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse.

Courtney Denning-Johnson Lynch, director of reproductive epidemiology at Wexner, said: “This is the second study in which we have demonstrated that women with high levels of the stress biomarker salivary alpha-amylase have a lower probability of becoming pregnant, compared to women with low levels of this biomarker.

“For the first time, we’ve shown that this effect is potentially clinically meaningful, as it’s associated with a greater than twofold increased risk of infertility among these women.”

Researchers tracked 501 American women aged between 18 and 40, who were free from fertility problems and had just begun trying to conceive. They were studied for 12 months or until they became pregnant as part of the Longitudinal Investigation of Fertility and the Environment (LIFE) Study.

Acupuncture is extremely relaxing, a US study, the first of its kind, found Acupuncture reduces levels of a protein linked to chronic stress.

The U.S. study tested the effect of acupuncture on blood levels of the protein neuropeptide Y (NPY), which is secreted by the sympathetic nervous system in humans.

This system is involved in the ‘flight or fight’ response to acute stress, resulting in constriction of blood flow to all parts of the body except to the heart, lungs and brain (the organs most needed to react to danger).

I personally find that the majority my clients find acupuncture incredibly relaxing whatever their reasons for having treatment.
